Thermal protection of alum adjuvanted vaccines
Aluminium hydroxide adjuvants, such as Alhydrogel™, are easily damaged by freezing, resulting in agglomeration and rendering vaccines useless. Freezing causes the aluminium component of the vaccine to precipitate and drastically reduces the vaccine’s potency.
This damage is a common problem in cold chain transport, where increased temperatures during storage or exposure of the adsorbed vaccine to freezing during transport lead to high wastage and increased costs.
Stabilitech’s alum freeze protection technology prevents damage, meaning that adjuvanted vaccines can be stored frozen. Stabilitech’s unique THERM-SB technology provides the stability that also enables alum adjuvanted vaccines to be lyophilised. Upon reconstitution, the gel reforms immediately and the vaccine is ready for injection with no loss of structure or function.
THERM-SB thermostability benefits include:
- Protection of protein components from temperature variations
- Prevention of adjuvant aggregation, if inadvertent freezing occurs (as shown in the figure below)
- Lyophilisation and reconstitution of the alum without subsequent precipitation or loss of structure or function/efficacy
